    Engineering method

PUE = Total Facility Energy / IT Equipment Energy

A PUE closer to 1 indicates lower facility overhead relative to IT. Status colors are evaluated against your entered target PUE, not a universal rating. WUE/CUE are calculated only when annual water/carbon inputs are supplied.

    Engineering FAQ

What measurement boundary should I use for PUE?

Use a consistent facility-energy boundary and a consistent IT-energy meter boundary across the reporting period. Document changes before comparing periods.

Can instantaneous power be used for PUE?

Instantaneous power is useful for operational snapshots, while annual energy is better for formal trend and reporting comparisons.

Why can PUE improve when IT load rises?

If facility overhead stays nearly fixed while useful IT load increases, the overhead is spread across more IT energy and PUE can fall.

What does WUE add to PUE?

WUE adds operational water use per unit of IT energy, so an energy-efficient cooling strategy can also be reviewed for water impact.

Is a lower PUE always better?

Lower facility overhead is generally desirable, but reliability, climate, redundancy, workload and measurement boundaries must be considered together.
