    Maximum channel loss

    Minimum transmit power minus receiver sensitivity. Use the worst-case values from the equipment specifications.

    Optical maximum distance

    Subtract fixed losses and engineering margin from the maximum channel loss, then divide by fiber attenuation per kilometer.

    Effective maximum distance

    Use the smaller of optical-budget maximum distance and the system or protocol reach cap.

    Planned link verification

    Check whether physical loss exceeds the equipment budget and whether the configured engineering margin is fully retained.

    Important note:PON deployment reach is not determined by optical power budget alone. OLT ranging, equipment configuration, protocol capability, differential distance and planning rules may also apply. The tool therefore displays optical-budget reach and effective system reach separately.

    Frequently asked questions

    Why can the optical budget reach 30 km while the result shows only 20 km?

    The effective distance is the smaller of optical-budget reach and the system reach cap. Even when optical power is sufficient, OLT ranging or network configuration may limit deployment.

    Why does a primary 1:8 and secondary 1:8 produce a total ratio of 1:64?

    The branch counts multiply, so 8 × 8 = 64. The losses are the sum of the actual insertion losses of the two splitters.

    Is optical-budget maximum distance the same as buildable distance?

    Not necessarily. Also verify the system reach cap, cable route, differential distance, equipment specifications and enterprise planning standards.

    What does "physical reach only" mean for the planned distance?

    Physical loss remains within the receiver-sensitivity budget, but the configured engineering margin is not fully retained, reducing long-term reliability.

    How much engineering margin should be configured?

    Set it according to enterprise standards and project conditions to cover ageing, temperature changes, maintenance connections, contamination and measurement variation.

    Can maximum-distance calculation replace OTDR testing?

    No. This tool supports design and review; field verification still requires a power meter, OTDR and actual equipment parameters.
